'our democratic scheme is at stake Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Duncan Lewis - Imagine for Yourself the Images a Society Has Informed or Will Inform when a Society Accepts Blasphemy as a Normative Paradigm Within its Midst.

“Instead
of responding to attacks against freedom of expression, voices were raised to decry blasphemy and to propose compromise with terrorism. There is no blasphemy in a democracy,” Mr. Rushdie said. ..
..the writer decried the reluctance of Western governments to use the words “Muslim” or “Islam,” preferring instead to attribute terrorist attacks to “unbalanced” people or to a generic thing like “radicalism” or “extremism,” even when the attackers themselves say Islam is their motive."

And what will, not may, happen where such a deviance construct of blasphemy is introduced by such dangerous ill-considered elite views?

“Jordanian writer Nahed Hattar was on his way to face blasphemy charges in Amman when a gunman, apparently seeking to punish Hattar for the satirical cartoon that led to the charges, shot him in front of a courthouse. The blasphemy charges cast a harsh light on the limits of free expression in one of the most democratic Arab states, just as the killing and and other recent violent incidents exposed how sectarian strife roiling the rest of the region is threatening Jordan’s stability.

Hattar’s trial and his death are just more brutal reminders of how theocratic governments and religious vigilantes -- often one in the same -- try to silence voices that challenge their dogma and power.”

"An accusation of blasphemy against Jakarta Gov. Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese and minority Christian who is an ally of the country's president, has galvanized his political opponents in the Muslim-majority nation of 250 million and given a notorious group of hard-liners a national stage.
....
Blasphemy is a criminal offense in Indonesia and prosecutions have increased in the past decade. Amnesty International documented 106 convictions between 2004 and 2014 with some individuals imprisoned for up to five years.
..
But the anti-Ahok movement, which has attracted moderates as well as hard-line elements as the city election approached, has overflowed with slurs based on race and religion. And local media have reported an uptick in public order offenses with an anti-Chinese motivation.

The vulnerability of Indonesia's ethnic Chinese minority remains a raw issue in the country. In the chaos that engulfed Indonesia in May 1998 amid the Asian financial crisis, mobs in Jakarta and other cities targeted Chinese businesses and individuals, killing many."

"Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty.” ― Abraham Lincoln

‘It was one of Lincoln’s ways of working out his chief value to the country, and that value was his clear sense from the start it was our democratic scheme that was at stake, and that if it was to be saved, every citizen who could aid must help to give all that was in them.

Lincoln seems to have put it something like this to himself:

“Everybody in the country has had a part in bringing this thing about; everybody feels they have a right to say how things shall be handled; everybody that is worth their salt is going to exercise that right, and they are going to do it according to the kind of person they are – according to their temperament, their training, their self-control, their meanness, and their goodness. If we are going to put this thing through and prove that citizens can govern themselves, we must get from them what they can give, and we must let them give it in their own way.” Source: The Life of Lincoln, Tachell

"Muhammad Anwar, 15, was attending a sermon when the cleric asked if anyone present was not a true lover of the prophet. The boy misheard the question, and enthusiastically raised his hand, causing the others to accuse him of heresy, police chief Mehr Nausher Ahmad Kathia told dpa. He was told that he had joined enemies of the prophet by raising his hand, so he vowed to remove the hand, Kathia said."

....... The infamy such a paradigm as blasphemy informs when accepted as a normative value within any society and this is what the Pope, Obama and Malcolm Turnbull Australia's Prime Minister who unleashed the the head of Australian security service Duncan Lewis to intimidate democratically elected Australian Parliamentarians wants to reintroduce into a Democratic liberal space.

"Blasphemy
is the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for (a) God(s), to religious or holy persons or sacred things, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider blasphemy as a religious crime."

"Civilization is a relative term used to denote the fact that man (humans) has become more or less a responsible being, belonging to society and serving and contributing toward the welfare of it. The country with the greatest number of reforms benefiting society is the most civilized. Evolution of civilization takes place when new reforms are accepted by the majority. Reforms are natural results of a given situation which stimulates people into action to solve the difficulty. They are not isolated or separate from the past. Reforms cover a period of time and may only terminate decades or even centuries later. One reform serves as a foundation for another generation."

Mere "comment on someone else’s religion (ideology-belief system)" is now within a Democratic liberal space to be determined as blasphemy which is a construct integrally linked to violent reactive behavior as response to challenge to the veracity of a human constructed belief-system. To consider Duncan Lewis a danger to the core values of a Democracy given his position in the political elites hierarchy must be regarded by citizens if we are to preserve Liberal Democracy as a manifest understatement. The silence Duncan Lewis demands is the silence of the watchers on the footpath soon to become victims themselves either in the process of being perpetrators or as the brutalised Other they inform.

The Western Liberal Democratic paradigm has been intrinsically and necessarily based upon the acceptance of the existence of uncertainty, nothing is sacred and above critical analysis testing of the veracity and benefits of human created beliefs, rationals, systems, individual and cultural group constructs regards the human condition. An understanding reform "the improvement or amendment of what is wrong, corrupt, unsatisfactory, etc" is dependent as is the very existence of an open democracy upon accepting nothing human made is "untouchable, unalterable, unchallengeable" because humans be they man or woman are not infallible and nor are the Gods (Ideologies-secular or religious) and exemplar (messianic) templates they create to excuse, justify and authorise their individual and cultural behavioral variance.

Blasphemy is as to a democratic state as antimatter is to matter as slavery is to freedom neither can exist for long without one or the other taking the space. In accepting blasphemy as an acceptable paradigm within a political space, the silencing of critical analysis of one entities affect upon the human condition immediately makes the same underlying principle applicable to other entities within the same system and I would argue sets a frame of mind which now has to guard against retribution for challenge in any sphere.

For cultural constructs tend towards non-contradictory rational system frameworks they cannot abide challenge which is why Malcolm Turnbull unleashed the head of the secret service upon citizens representatives - the blasphemy was in two directions against the culture informing terror and against the promoters of a failed policy in managing a cultures terror into our streets both felt challenge of their 'rational' an "act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence ..toward something considered sacred or inviolable.". A cultures inherent capacity to systemically inform terror and inept dangerous gatekeepers policy failure in determining citizens will just have to 'confidently grow' with another cultures terror-genocide in their streets.

Democracy cannot afford the return of the 'blasphemy' paradigm within our Western Liberal
public and private spheres as an excuse for 'provocation' of a culture's terror-genocide against Other cultures, as an excuse for not only the failure of our inept dangerous cultural gatekeepers to keep their citizens safe but also to be utilised by the head of a secret service and those who have sent him to silence those who know the policy has failed and why.

Duncan Lewis and those who determine him an 'expert' had better pick up a history book, any history book very quickly and reflect upon what it actually means to unleash such a construct as 'blasphemy' as a normative ethical construct within any society so as to enforce silence on pain of violence, even murder emanating from a culture. Has it ever worked? Does silence in the end save you from such a culture? The fact this request has been seen to have to be made in the first place surely is a red flag to someone in our political elite?

Under a Western democratic rational model blasphemy has been replaced by challenge, opposition, ridicule, etc. and does not hold the same behavioral reactionary connotations in Islam where it excuses physical harm even the murder of Other simply by association as we have seen.

Clearly Duncan Lewis fails to understand (At least I hope so) differing ‘rational’ models can inform significantly differing behaviors in reaction to the same behavior or concept – Duncan Lewis in simply making this one statement determines himself unfit for the office he holds.

"Every set of beliefs introduces its own logic and its own constraints.

..to a decision scientist, “rational” means “consistency with some model.” Rational decisions are not necessarily dispassionate, nor well-reasoned, nor selfish. They are not even necessarily good decisions, from others’ perspectives. They simply are consistent."

"Culture, of course, is related to violence in general and not only to structural violence. For example, culture influences the determination of "thresholds" which pressure on a person must overcome in order to move that person from being controllable, or even positive, to being negative (that is, into violence)."
The Culture of Violence, Chp 3. On the relationship between violence and culture - Galtung's concept

Duncan Lewis insisting we must now operate under a blasphemy paradigm is for me a very dangerous precedent a clear attempt in my view to change the very nature of Western Democracy, to remove a citizens ability to challenge ideological constructs in our midst which has developed to remove infamy be it derived from the secular or religious constructs, the very reason Western Democracies have been able to come into existence.

This demand can also be clearly seen as an obvious self-serving device to prevent inept cultural gatekeepers who allow such cultures to flourish from being held accountable for failed policy which informs continuing piles of broken bodies in our streets. The pile of bodies can now be blamed upon those who openly object to cultural constructs informing terror-genocide which clearly applies equally to the silent as well as the noisy.

Duncan Lewis is asking citizens in Westerner Democratic state to revert to a barbaric paradigm which undermines the very nature of Democracy.

Surely if the Islamic/Muslim culture informs the requirement for such a barbaric paradigm they are not suited to exist in a Liberal Democratic state for it means terror-genocide is on its way – gosh did you notice those bloody bodies in our streets?

I could be wrong we are in for a ‘Wonderful, exciting time for all Australians.’ – Yeah bullshit can go faster than the speed of light.

“The world has never had a good definition of the word liberty, and the American people, just now, are much in want of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name, liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names, liberty and tyranny. The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty, especially as the sheep was a black one. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty.”
